On the morning of February 26, the RMB exchange rate rose sharply. Both offshore and onshore RMB against the US dollar broke above the key level of 6.85, hitting the strongest level since April 14, 2023. This strong appreciation has greatly boosted confidence in China’s foreign trade and export sectors.
Wang Qing, chief macro analyst at Dongfang Jincheng, stated that the RMB has maintained a solid and strong trend against the US dollar since December 2025, and continued to appreciate rapidly after the Spring Festival. He summarized three major driving forces. First, the continuous improvement and stabilization of Sino-US economic and trade relations since November 2025 has created a more favorable external environment for China’s foreign trade and currency performance. Second, the US dollar has recently come under obvious pressure due to domestic policy and institutional factors, which has directly supported the appreciation of non-US currencies including the RMB. Third, the continuous growth of China’s exports has gradually released accumulated foreign exchange settlement demand, providing strong fundamental support for the RMB exchange rate.
The People’s Bank of China reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the basic stability of the RMB exchange rate in a rational and balanced range. Meanwhile, many institutions maintain a positive outlook. Xiong Yuan, chief economist at Guosheng Securities, predicted that the RMB exchange rate against the US dollar will most likely fluctuate between 6.8 and 7.1 in 2026, showing a stable and slightly strong trend.
